Onion Ring Salad is known as Raw Red Onion Spicy Salad, Red Onion Spicy Salad, Laccha Onion Salad, or Pyaaz Ka Lachcha in Hindi. It is a simple & easy salad made with thinly/thick sliced raw onion, herbs(cilantro and/or mint), spices, sugar, and acid like vinegar or freshly squeezed lime and lemon juice.
It’s very popular in Northern India and can be made with red, white, or sweet Vidalia onions depending on your tastes. The dish is vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, egg-free, nut-free, dairy-free, and keto-friendly.
I do not suggest eating a bowl of raw onion salad on its own like you would a Caesar Salad or any other salad unless you’re prepared to brush your teeth for an hour afterward! 🙂 😀
I love to get creative with our Onion Ring Salad recipe. It’s fun to transform the marinated raw onions into other yummy dishes. Sometimes, I suggest finely chop the leftover onions and mix them into a bowl of Greek yogurt. You can serve the creamy onion dip with grilled naan, nachos, slices of fresh vegetables or sourdough bread slices at a summer barbecue or potluck dinner party.
Step By Step Recipe:
1. Peel, slice the onions into thick slices and separate out the rings.

2. Soak the onion in water for 5-10 minutes and drain.

3. Add spices – salt, red chili powder, cumin powder, garam masala, sugar(optional), chopped cilantro, and squeeze lemon on it. Mix well.

4. Laccha onion ring salad is ready. You can eat with any type of side dishes like biryani, barbecue, tandoori item, and any curries.


Serve immediately after mixing everything as the salt draws out the liquid from the onion quite quickly. Also, because of raw onions, it starts to smell strong if stored for later.

- 2 medium red onion
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1½ tbsp red chili powder
- ½ tbsp cumin powder
- ½ tbsp garam masala (optional)
- ½ tbsp sugar (optional)
- 2 tbsp cilantro (chopped)
- 4 tbsp lemon juice
Instructions
- Peel, slice the onions into thick slices and separate out the rings. Soak them in cold water for 15 minutes. If you prefer pungent taste of raw onions, you can skip this step. Then drain all the water.
